Ferrotitanium

A high grade titanium ore sand, namely rutile (TiO2), containing 94% TiO2 was smelted together with varying amounts of aluminum pellets, iron fines and lime to produce ferrotitanium containing varying grades of Ti. The object was to establish whether it could be possible to produce commercial grade ferrotitanium in a melt reduction furnaced. The reaction tested was:

 3/2TiO2 + 2Al + CaO  = CaAl2O4 + 3/2Ti 

 Ferrotitanium containing 40% Ti was achieved which indicated that the melt reduction process had potential in this type of application.
